Why worry about exceptional health and safety?
Law changes mean big challenges for small business

Changes to health and safety legislation are coming. The question is what it means for small to medium business. One of the keys is companies must focus on exceptional health and safety performance in respect of critical risk and not waste scarce resources on lesser issues.
Humans are programmed to take risks – including your employees. Odds on accidents will happen.

Business owners and managers have a legal duty to identify and remove or reduce risk in the workplace, taking account of the fact humans will take risks and some of those humans are your employees? Building and maintaining a health and safety culture where taking a risk is simply not acceptable behaviour, is essential to mitigate these risks.
Specialist advice minimises your business risk

There are several laws, a multitude of standards, copious Worksafe and industry guidance and a growing number of Approved Codes of Practice – all detailing how you run your operations. It is easy and expensive to get it wrong. Therefore, seeking specialist advice is crucial for ensuring the health and safety of your business is compliant and safe.
Serious fines for are being applied for gaps in health and safety

Kiwi Rail has recently been fined $220,000 after an employee fell from a 10-metre height while installing a telecommunications pole. The court found issues with risk assessments, safe work procedures, and training. Ultimately, gaps in exceptional health and safety systems can lead to costly legal outcomes.
This case illustrates the need for specialist advice when engaging in work at height, or any other high risk work. Knowing and consistently applying height safety procedures is fundamental to health and safety performance that is exceptional and does not harm your people and your business.

Is H&S compliance needed for my business – it is only small? In H&S size does not matter. Like paying GST, you need to comply with relevant legislative requirements applicable to your business.
How much does a safety consultant cost NZ? It depends on the work being done and the seniority. The latest survey put the average hourly charge out rate for a senior consultant at $175 per hour. So you are best to enter into an arrangement where the cost per hour will be considerably less and the consultancy can use less expensive staff working under the oversight of experienced people.
