Streamline Your Safety: The Winsland H&S App

audit

For SME in New Zealand, your health and safety records are effectively your business insurance policy. Whether you’re a team of 5 or 50, documenting your safety efforts is the only way to prove you’re meeting your legal “Primary Duty of Care.”

Do You Actually Need a System?

The “paperwork” burden depends entirely on your scale:

5 to 50 Employees: Documentation becomes essential. You need a centralized hub to track training, equipment checks, and high-risk procedures. Without a system, things slip through the cracks.

Under 5 Employees (Low Risk): Your existing employee records and council certifications usually suffice. At this scale, manual tracking is often manageable.

Why is health and safety information important?

Firstly, it allows you to keep track of whether you and your people are compliant with date driven things like license renewals, fire drills and training and ensures you are compliant. It should be where you enroll people for training and track when training is completed and flag when it is due.

Secondly, it allows you to demonstrate you have identified and are actively controlling your critical risks. If you can’t show this and the worst happens then it’s like self insurance. The APP should be where you risk register is, it should extract your critical controls from the risk register and produce checklists for you to monitor controls and it should produce reports for officers and others to understand what is happening in your business with managing risk.

Third, it can support your health and safety management practices as detailed in your health and safety management system – risk management, chemicals, facilities and equipment being other examples.

Fourth, it is where your health and safety management system rests and associated documents are generated and held. Your policy, your procedures, your forms.

Think of health and safety and most people think of paperwork, which translates into time and effort being required. The APP is much more than this, it is the heart of your health and safety management system. Minimising the pain of paperwork and tracking health and safety conformance is at the heart of the Winsland Health and Safety APP.

Case Study – Drury Farms

Drury Farms has five employees but uses several contractors. Therefore they required a system to manage employee and contractor health and safety. Consequently, after reviewing what was available, they elected to use the Winsland Health and Safety APP.

Winsland provided them with a link to download their own version of the APP. The Site Manager consequently used this to populate the fields they elected to use. As a result, the APP was fully operation immediately and fully populated within a month.
