Changes to health and safety legislation are coming. The question is what it means for small to medium business.

Our main concern is with Approved Codes of Practice. These are a pathway to imposing highly prescriptive “nice to have” requirements on companies. Watch this space …. If you don’t know what the the changes are, keep reading or contact us.

Fall from Height is one of the leading causes of workplace death and serious injury in New Zealand.

KiwiRail has recently been fined $220,000 for breaching workplace health and safety laws after an employee fell from a 10-metre height while installing a telecommunications pole.

The worker is reported to have suffered a torn artery, a torn liver, a broken sternum, a punctured left lung, nine fractured vertebrae, and five fractured ribs. He also underwent surgery to remove blood clots in his legs.

The failures identified included issues with risk assessments, procedures, and training for work at height. In addition a fall arrest system, whilst installed, was not in use at the time of the incident. This case illustrates the need for specialist advice when engaging in work at height. It is an area Winsland has experience so feel free to contact us for advice.
